Continuing in my vein of mystery/thriller suggestions, my Monday must-read this week is Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberley McCreight.
This is McCreight’s first book. It was brought to my attention through Goodreads, which suggested it after I added Gone Girl to my to-read shelf.
(Sidenote: If you don’t use Goodreads, you may want to consider it. It’s a good way to organize your books and get suggestions based on what other readers who have read titles you’ve shelved have enjoyed.)
Reconstructing Amelia was amazing. The short chapters and compelling narrative pushed me through the book quickly. The plot centers around the single mother of a teenage girl who is found dead outside her school. Officials say it was a suicide, Amelia jumped. But her mother, Kate, doesn’t believe it.
Kate begins digging through her daughter’s life to find out what really happened. And the ending is sure to surprise you.
The book, which was an Edgar Award nominee for best first novel, alternates between Kate’s point of view and Amelia’s and is easy to follow.
It got great reviews and was included on some lists as one of the best books in 2013.
Since its release, the book has been optioned to HBO Films and Nicole Kidman is set to produce and star. I, for one, look forward to seeing it.
This is one book you’re going to want to read before you watch the movie.
