If you need some motivation in your Monday to go with a book recommendation, look no further. My Monday must-read this week is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.
This book tells the story of Louis Zamperini, a track star turned WWII bomber pilot turned ultimate survivor. The resilience is astounding.
Zamperini was a rambunctious kid. Getting into trouble, getting out of trouble. Your usual kid. When he became a pilot, he flew daring missions with his crew before they were shot down over the Pacific. Zamperini and several other crew members survived, clinging to a life raft in the middle of an ocean.
Eventually, Zamperini was rescued along with one other crew member. By the Japanese. Placed in a POW camp, the men had to fight again for their survival until their rescue.
I know I could never have endured mentally what Zamperini and the many others like him had to go through, even in part. Just the idea of sharks leaping into a life raft to try and get at me would have been enough for me to quit (especially since I’m deathly afraid of sharks).
This story is beautifully written and incredibly powerful. It has been turned into a movie scheduled to be released this Christmas. Angelina Jolie is directing with a Coen Brothers script.
Unbroken really inspired me. I know that a person will get down and break eventually because it’s just human. However, Zamperini pushed himself far beyond whatever boundaries he thought he had. Absolutely incredible. This book gives a whole new understanding to the “Greatest Generation.”
