My Monday must-read this week is a beautiful love story that took my breath away: Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter.
The novel follows the story of Pasquale, who runs a small Italian inn with his family in the 1960s. A beautiful Hollywood actress stays at the inn and Pasquale falls in love with her. The actress is working on the set of a movie filming in Italy, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. He cares for the actress after she “becomes ill.”
However, that’s not the only story being followed in the novel. The plot also follows Pasquale in the present, as an older man searching for the long-lost Hollywood actress he once loved.
Walter writes a beautiful story, intertwining the throes of young love and young love revived in old age.
As I read the book, I thought that it would make a beautiful, critically acclaimed but maybe not major blockbuster, movie. (Reportedly, the movie is in development now.)
While elements might be considered “chick-lit,” the story really, in my opinion, does not classify as such. It’s just a beautiful story.
This book is a marvelous read and I highly recommend it.
